Cooking Japchae (잡채)@ Yonsei KLI

Every term there is a special activity held for the class; sometimes more than one. In level one there was a speech contest at the end of the term. Now in level two there are 2 activities: The first one was a cooking class (which I’m about to go deep into) and the second is a singing/dancing contest at the end of the term. Today was my cooking class and the menu included Japchae (잡채)

Lets start with the classroom. Several cooking labs are located in the basement of the KLI building. I must add that Im quite impressed with the quality, and how modern they are/look. In my classroom there where 3 bars whit two full stoves+oven each; this makes a total of 6 cooking modules. Also there is a board and a cooking cell for the teachers, a mirror is conveniently placed above this cell so you can easily watch how food is being prepared. There are several refrigerators and storage cabinets. by the time why where in the tables where already setup. In the drawers we would find all the cooking tools we could possibly need to prepare our food.

Moving on into the food. Japchae (잡채) is basically a meal made of sweet potato stir-fried noodles with cooked vegetables. Among the vegetables are: carrots, spinach, onion, and mushrooms.  Beef is also included and you add some taste with soy sauce. Making it was actually pretty easy an straight forward, just chop everything and cook vegetables in pan. Season the beef and cook it on a pan as well. Cook the noodles in boiling water and then integrate everything into a noodle-vegetable-mass. Serve and eat.

The whole experience was really enjoyable and hopefully will bring our group closer together. Its been only 2 weeks since the beginning of the term. The timing for the activity was exceptional as we are currently covering cooking-related words and verbs in our class. Nonetheless most people will look at each others faces when we didn’t knew what to do.
